They probably had the 205* thermostat for the early part of emissions regulations to get the engines to barely skip under the wire for passing. Of course the later models (99-06) use a good stamped steel VC instead of aluminum, but at least it doesn't leak. You do need to keep the valve cover with the head, as the covers won't all interchange.
